Synopsis:
When Captain Sulu of the U.S.S. Excelsior relays to Starfleet Command that the Klingon moon of Praxis has exploded, Alpha Quadrant politics are thrown into chaos. Captain Spock argues before the Command Council that the opportunity this disaster offers is primarily a diplomatic one. While others maintain that this is the moment to deliver a final, killing blow to the Klingon Empire, he volunteers the services of Captain Kirk and the Enterprise to bring the leader of the Klingons into discussions for a cessation of hostilities. This is a mission for which Jim Kirk would never have asked. Not only has much of his career been devoted to holding the military line against the Klingons, they have recently killed his son. Understandably, he is initially on the side of those in the vocal minority, arguing that this situation requires a harder line. Still, he's under orders. After an uncomfortable rendezvous with the Klingon diplomatic mission, shots are apparently fired from the Enterprise which cripple the Klingon ship and kill the Klingon leader. Rushing on board the Kilingon vessel to offer assistance, McCoy and Kirk are easily captured and taken back to the Klingon homeworld for trial. They are sentenced to life in a penal colony. Taking what he hopes is temporary command of the Enterprise, Spock launches an investigation into the incident which he hopes will reveal what truly happened. In the process, he uncovers a massive conspiracy which threatens to further destabilize the whole of the Alpha Quadrant. Unless he can rescue Kirk and McCoy, and enlist the aid of the only other Starfleet commander he can trust--Sulu of Excelsior--Spock's vision of a new era of Klingon/Federation relations may be lost forever . . .
