Synopsis: Now a member of the Avengers, Ms. Marvel is put through her paces in the team’s training room with Iron Man at the controls. She takes the best the room can dish out, impressing Iron Man, and she even flirts with him as they leave, but he offends her with his doubts that super-heroing is a good career for women.
Meanwhile, SHIELD deputy director Jasper Sitwell angrily protests to representatives of the Canadian Defense Ministry who are transferring containment of Sabretooth to SHIELD with the assurance that SHIELD will train Sabretooth in unarmed combat for potential future deployment in recapturing Wolverine. Sitwell is furious that his objections have been overruled by politicians, and is adamant that Sabretooth is uncontrollable even though the Canadians claim he will behave himself in their custody.
After a shower at home, Carol Danvers tries calling Dr. Michael Barnett, but he doesn’t answer the phone as he’s just been killed. Unaware, Carol goes out for lunch with her accountant John Jellicoe and his wife Nancy, who is also Carol’s literary agent. While eating, a SHIELD van hurtles through the window and Carol barely saves the Jellicoes’ lives. Unnoticed, she transforms into Ms. Marvel and heads outside, where the police captain tells her that Sabretooth was being transported in the van until he broke out and ran into the subway.
Carol is familiar with Sabretooth from an FBI security file she once saw, and attacks him from behind, but has to suspend the fight to stop a subway train that has entered the tunnel and is in danger of crashing into debris on the rails. She finally takes him down after pummeling him repeatedly with stun punches to the base of his neck. And only moments after Sabretooth falls, she experiences a horrific seventh-sense vision that hints at her death.
Notes: This story was intended to be published as Ms. Marvel (1976) #24, but the series was canceled after issue #23.
Takes place prior to events in Avengers Annual #10.
