In the 41st Century, Japan has become a living organism, governed by the computer known as Grandmother. In Japan, a growing movement known as the "Anti-Grannies" seeks to bring down Grandmother and return Japan to its natural roots. In order to protect Japan, Grandmother has a guardian known as the Rai. The current Rai, Rentaro Nakadai is growing old and seeks his son to finally become his replacement. When a battle with vi-robs leaves Rentaro, injured his son Tohru has no option but to become the new Rai, as the Anti-Grannies seek to bring Magnus to Japan! Returning home to say goodbye to his family, Tohru learns that his wife is sympathetic to the Anti-Grannies. Seeing no other alternative, Tohru takes his son Takashi and gives him to Grandmother to protect and groom into becoming the next Rai.

Rai #1 was mistakenly credited to Paul Creddick. It was actually drawn by David Lapham.
