Algon was the son of the villain sorcerer known as Taboo. It's unknown if anything initially inflicted him, but Taboo cast a spell on him. A "spell of changes" that was taken from The Darkhold. The spell was apparently only half complete when the villagers that lived in the surrounding area of Taboo's castle, led by the father of Jack Russell (aka Werewolf by Night), Gregory Russoff, stormed the castle and took the Darkhold while Taboo managed to escape with his son only half transformed and wrapped in bandages. The apparent goal of the spell was to transform Algon into a being that would have the ability to transform objects into gold, diamonds or any element or energy that Taboo demanded.

For 20 years Algon lay comatose due to the spell being incomplete. After capturing Jack Russell and his stepfather Philip Russell in hopes that they could give him the Darkhold, Taboo demanded that Topaz (whom he had taken in as a child and raised) use her powers to kill Jack. Being a good person, Topaz refused, but the demands on her caused her to faint from stress and worry and she accidentally swapped Philip Russell's mind with Algon's mind, effectively causing a mind swap. After laying comatose for two decades, even with the mind of Philip Russell, Algon was a mindless monster and the fact that his mind was technically occupying the body of Philip Russell didn't help. After escaping Taboo's castle, Jack, Topaz and Philip regrouped at his apartment and Topaz confirmed what she had suspected, that the minds of the two had been swapped. At this point, she destroyed what little was left of Algon's mind within Philip, leaving his body a sleeping empty shell.

Taboo in the meantime, finally decided that he had enough power and the proper mystical items to complete his spell on Algon. He summoned the soul of Topaz to complete the spell. Jack had decided he needed to end Taboo's terror and returned to where he had been held before and battled again with Algon. As the two fought, Algon touched a giant statue of Buddha turning it into gold. Taboo rushed towards the statue, ecstatic that he could now have all the wealth in the world. The increased weight of the statue caused the base on which it sat to crumble and topple onto Taboo, crushing him to death. As Algon stared, distracted, Werewolf by Night knocked him in to the pot which Taboo had used to complete his spell. Mystic forces grasped Algon with hands of ashes and smoke, instantly killing him and setting the spirit and mind of Philip Russell free.
