Silver Surfer (Marvel)
Real Name: Norrin Radd
Search for 'Silver Surfer (Marvel)' on Amazon

He has the ability to channel ambient cosmic energy into his body at will, and expel it violently as concussive force or gently as a means to restructure molecules according to his mental design. The Surfer can generate beams of energy with sufficient destructive force to destroy a planet or, by contrast, generate such subtle amounts of energy to restructure the molecules of the natural pigments within a plant to change its color. The Surfer can rearrange the molecules of matter to create other configurations and can even directly transmute elements. While he can use his power to revitalize life energies and heal the wounded, there is no proof that he can create life from nothingness or return the dead to life.

The Surfer possesses vast superhuman strength. Additionally, the Surfer can use the Power Cosmic to amplify his physical strength to a level at least rivaling that of an enraged Savage Hulk. In addition, his body can move and react at superhuman velocities, he routinely navigates asteroid fields and attacks entire amaradas of starships at near light speed while maintaining surgical precision.

The Silver Surfer has certain cosmic energy-enhanced perceptions which enable him, through concentration, to become aware of the patterns of energy which surround him. Accordingly, he can sense great concentrations or deployments of energy in a great range, the extent of which is undetermined but is at least on an intra-galactic scale. He has a special affinity for the life energies of living beings, and can use his cosmic powers to augment them to a certain degree. The Surfer's other senses are also thus enhanced: he has demonstrated the ability to see as far as a light year while concentrating and without obstructions to his line of sight. Although the Surfer's senses are superhumanly keen, his sometimes detached and introspective nature occasionally leaves him unaware of his surroundings.

Compassion and selflessness. Susceptible to psychic/psionic or magic attack. The only other characters that seem to give him difficulty are other characters that possess an equal or greater amount of the Power Cosmic.

Norrin Radd is from the utopian planet Zenn-La, in the Deneb star system of the Milky Way galaxy. Zenn-La's ancient and significantly advanced civilization has lost the will to strive or explore, leaving the young scholar Norrin Radd restless and yearning for adventure. Facing the destruction of his world by planet-consuming Galactus, Radd bargains with the cosmic being. In return for the safety of Zenn-La and his lover, Shalla-Bal, Radd pledges to seek out planets for the world devourer to consume as his herald. Galactus imbues him with a portion of the Power Cosmic, transforming him into the Silver Surfer. Radd had intended to lead Galactus to uninhabited planets, but Galactus tampers with his soul to prevent this.

Radd serves Galactus for an unspecified amount of time. Eventually, the Surfer summons his master to Earth. Here the Surfer meets the Fantastic Four and Alicia Masters. Touched by their nobility, he rebels against Galactus, who is eventually driven off. Before he leaves, he confines the Surfer to Earth with an invisible barrier that affects only him.

In the beginning of his exile on Earth, the Silver Surfer would only find trouble. After skirmishes with the Hulk and Doctor Doom, he began lashing out at humanity, only to be taken down by the U.S. military and the Fantastic Four and convinced what he was doing was wrong. He would then go up against foes such as Abomination, Mephisto and tricked into a battle against Thor by the Asgardian's brother Loki.

Eventually the Silver Surfer found friendship. He joined a temporary alliance with the Sub-Mariner and the Hulk to oppose destructive weather technology. He was later be offered a position with the Defenders, but turned it down. He later helped the Fantastic Four take down Galactus's latest herald, the android Air-Walker. After coming under the influence of minions of the Undying Ones, he was freed by the Defenders and agreed to join the group.

With the Defenders, he would battle foes such as the Red Ghost, Attuma and the Nameless One. During a quest to restore Black Knight (Dane Whitman), the Surfer with the group battled the Avengers until both groups realized they were being manipulated by Loki and Dormammu. Together, both groups defeated the foes. They also battled a demon and it's masters, which included Mephisto and helped the Squadron Supreme of Earth-712 wrest control of their Earth from Null the Living Darkness. The team as it stood would come to an end when Strange, Namor and the Silver Surfer would leave the Defenders after an alien tribunal fraudulently claimed that the group would doom Earth if they continued as a team.

The Silver Surfer would spend his time assisting other groups, such as battling Doctor Doom with the Fantastic Four and fighting Molecule Man with the Avengers (afterwards, they offered the Surfer membership, but he declined).

After saving Galactus's herald Nova (Frankie Raye) from the Skrulls, Galactus ended the Surfer's exile. The Silver Surfer celebrated his freedom by "surfing" the cosmos. He would get in the middle of hostilities between the Skrull and Kree, multiple battles against the Elders of the Universe, Ego the Living Planet and many others. Among the many cosmic menaces the Silver Surfer would go up against, the worst would be Thanos. This would occur when Thanos erased half the population of the universe from existence with the Infinity Gauntlet. Silver Surfer would join other superheroes in battling the menacing Eternal, reversing the Gauntlet's effects and destroying it.

The Silver Surfer eventually became Galactus's herald again following the Annihilation Wave's entrance into our universe.
