Robin was an above-average combatant and gymnast with some training in several martial arts disciplines, including aikidô, as well as some basic training in forensics. Her utility belt was equipped with the Batman family's usual gear, including Batarangs, de-cel jumplines, various gas and flashbang grenades, tracer devices, and a grapnel gun. She wore a Nomex/Kevlar bodysuit with an armoured tunic and weighted-tip Nomex/Kevlar cape, and her domino mask was fitted with Starlite night-vision lenses, a radio receiver/transceiver, and an inertial navigation unit. When tracking serial-killer Victor Zsazs, she was issued a more protective uniform made of an aluminum/fiberglass weave.

Robin's enthusiasm led her to overestimate her abilities, and she was not permitted to patrol alone; she worked with either Batman or Batgirl. In her eagerness to help Batman, she inadvertently let herself become a hostage to a skilled assassin, resulting in her dismissal.

After her boyfriend Tim Drake quit as the third Robin, Stephanie Brown donned a home-made Robin costume and sneaked into the Batcave to apply for the job. Despite his previous efforts to dissuade her from a career as a costumed crimefighter as the Spoiler -- up to and including "firing" her from serving as a member of the Batman family -- Batman was impressed by her persistence and enthusiasm, and appointed her the fourth Robin -- the first Girl Wonder (although she had previously been Robin in a modified version of reality). She served for 49 days before she disobeyed an order in the field during an encounter with an assassin wherein the Batman had been temporarily blinded; she misjudged the situation and ended up a hostage. On day 71 of her service as Robin, she was dismissed from service and told to clear her things from the Batcave. In time Tim would return to active duty as the fifth Robin.

Robin stood 5'5" and weighed 110 lbs. Despite possessing a valid driver licence, Batman did not permit Robin to drive the Batmobile. He promised he would let her fly the Batwing sometime before she turned thirty-five. When the magic-powered Bedlam modified reality to prevent the creation of Young Justice, Stephanie became Robin instead of Tim Drake, resulting in a seemingly more stable and successful career as the Girl Wonder; this version of Robin wore a different mask, resembling that of her father rather than the traditional Robin domino mask.
